Letters From World War One

Letters home from Private Edward Ray Jackson who joined the 160th Bruce Battalion of the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Forces in 1916, 8 months before his 18th birthday. He served as a gunner in France with the 1st Battalion of the 1st Canadian Division under Marshal Ferdinand Foch and was wounded in action at Arras on August 30, 1918.

December 7, 1917 Witley Camp

Ray is back from his leave to Scotland and writes to his mother about the Victory War Loan campaign. He received the Christmas box from the Patriotic League.

Edward A. (Ray) Jackson

Ray Jackson, born November 21, 1897 in Amabel Township, Bruce County, was the fourth child of Edward J. Jackson and Elizabeth Barbour. An older brother Sydney died in 1904 at age 11. His father died suddenly in 1912, leaving his mother with eight children and a large farm in Teeswater, Ontario to manage. At the age of 17, Ray enlisted with the Bruce Battalion March 23, 1916 to fight for his King and Country.

These letters, saved by the family, survived many moves. They will be posted chronologically to give an impression of Ray's journey through the war. Ray Jackson was my father-in-law.

Ruth Zaryski Jackson
Ruth has written stories and poems when younger, then academic papers or reports as a student, a researcher and later an Historical Planner. She started writing memoir when she realized she needed to tell her story, not only to her children, but also to her younger siblings whose childhoods differed greatly from hers. She has improved her craft taking on-line courses with U3A, Ryerson University and Days Road Writers. Allyson Latta's gentle support was instrumental in having her first story published in 2008 in "The Wisdom of Old Souls", an anthology about Grandmothers. In 2010 two of her poems were published in "Grandmothers' Necklace".
